With a full congregation, the Cathedral pipe organ had insufficient volume to properly lead the singing. Consequently, rather than undertake a very expensive rebuild and enlargement, the decision was taken to add a second digital instrument which would also allow the relatively easy addition of a west end division. A design was agreed based on the very successful Viscount Regent 356, although it was built into a custom console.

The Regent Classic custom built organ now complements the old pipe organ very nicely as there is an appropriate instrument for all occasions. At times when more popular music is requested for weddings, the speaker system is also used for the playing of pre-recorded music.
